EAW Heinkel He.111B "Pedro"

This is Version 3 of a new 3DZ I developed of the early version He.111 which participated in the Spanish Civil War. It had less powerful 600HP engines and a stepped nose rather than the later models' more familiar all glass nose. Starting with the original EAW He.111H glass nosed model, I added a new nose, a new cockpit area, new so-called, "dust bin" belly machine gun position, and a new dorsal spine/upper machine gun position.

The update includes a better looking nose shape and additional markings which I was able to verify from some photographs I had not seen before. The Condor Legion insignia was added to the fuselage roundel and the plane had the name PEDRO painted on the nose (notice it is non- mirrored.

Version 3 update eleiminates the "broken back" appearance of the upper rear fuselage spine. The tail planes were too low and fuselage had been made to dip to low to meet them. The cockpit area has been narrowed as it was too wide. This plane carried a radio antenna just aft of the cockpit and it has been added. Finally, the tail wheel on the He111B was not retractable, so it is now locked down.

I also added non-mirrored fuselage codes. (Doesn't use the V1 file like some other non-mirrored He.111's) I developed the skin starting with the original EAW PCX for this plane.

Germany provided 100 B and E model He111 to the Nationalist side. These aircraft, along with their "volunteer" crews, flew with K/88 of the Condor Legion. In May of 1938, mixed German and Spanish units were formed and in August of that year a wholly Spanish unit was formed on the He.111B and E models - Grupo 10-G-25.

In Spain the Heinkel was known as the "Pedro" as a result of the phoney passports issued to the German personnel. For some reason, all He.111 crews were given the first name of Pedro, while all the Ju.52 bomber crews were given the name Pablo. A number of the first He.111's in Spain had the name Pedro painted on the nose in large block letters.

This particular aircraft was flown by Lt. Fuhrhop. The emblem on the tail commemorates the crew's mascot, a Scotch Terrier dog named Peter, who was killed by a bullet fired by a Republican Polikarpov I-16 during a bombing raid over Segunto on 13-6-1938.

To add it into EAW - simply unzip all the 3DZ and TPC files and put them into your EAW folder.

Cheers
